Mysore is synonym with music. So as R Dileep, who is not just a musician, but also a Mysorean who has his roots in the cultural capital.

R Dileep assumed charge as the new superintendent of police (SP) on Thursday.

How he became a police is a story worth inspiring. An engineering graduate in instrumentation Technology from Bangalore university, Dileep wanted to join civil services to do his bit for the welfare of the society.

Thrice he tried his luck in Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Though he could pass through the two levels- preliminary and main exams, he wasn’t that lucky in interview.

Undeterred he went on to write Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) exams and excelled in eighth rank. Says Dileep: “It was blessing in disguise”. He joined Karnataka State Police Service (KSPS) as Dy SP in 1997.

A  2005 batch IPS officer (he was promoted to IPS cadre in that year), he was earlier additional SP of the district, before shifting to intelligence wing of the State here as SP between 2004 and 05.

He was also a part of special investigation team (SIT) headed by another senior IPS officer R Srikumar. It was SIT that probed into the fake stamp paper scam and nailed its kingpin Karim Lala Telgi.

Dileep was also in-charge of then chief minister N Dharam Singh’s security. He is the recipient of CM’s gold medal for meritorious services in 2006.

When contacted by Deccan Herald, the officer said neither he is new to Mysore nor Mysore is to him.

His grandfather Mysore Narasima Swamy was working with then Mysore Insurance Company. His father Mysore Ramaswamy was with defence ministry. That was how Mysore Ramaswamy moved out of the native. Says the officer- till my father ‘Mysore’ was prefixed to his name.

“However, I stil remember visiting my grand parents house near Ballal circle. Palace, KRS, Zoo still remain my favourite tourist spots in the city”, recalls Dileep.

He has to his credit performing mridangam in Dasara thrice, besides Akashvani, Bangalore Doordarshan and Akka convention in 2010. As a rotarian he had been to Germany as goodwill ambassador. He had also been to Spain as a delegate.
