South Western Railways, Mysuru, has introduced a new concept, the ‘Train Captain’, for integration of service delivery systems on long-distance express trains.

Mysuru-Nizamuddin Swarnajayanthi Super-fast weekly express is the first train to get a Train Captain. The new concept was implemented on July 6.

Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru, Aparna Garg, informed that the seniormost ‘Ticket Checking’ member on the train is designated as Train Captain for coordinating with on board staff of different departments such as Mechanical, Electrical, Operations, Security as also Catering and on board Housekeeping Services personnel, for providing seamless and complaint-free services during the entire course of the journey of the train.

In addition to Swarnajayanthi express, two other long-distance trains originating at Mysuru-Mysuru-Dadar Sharavathi weekly express and Ajmer-bound bi-weekly express will also have the services of a Train Captain, she added.

The DRM also stated that the Train Captain will have a distinct arm badge and a mobile phone with the contact details of all on board staff so as to initiate action to fix problems as and when reported.

Unlike in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains, where Train Superintendents work on end-to-end basis, the Train Captain of trains starting at Mysuru will be handing over the charge to his counterpart at Hubballi, the second leg of the journey, she said.

Aparna also expressed confidence that the new concept would go a long way in enhancing customer satisfaction with qualitative improvement in on board services of long distance mail and express trains, which incidentally was a priority area for the railways.
