Future of Kanive hanging bridge hangs in balance

The only link for villagers between the border areas of Northern Kodagu and Mysuru has been cut as the hanging bridge built across River Cauvery near Kanive Sri Ramalingeshwara Temple is in a dilapidated condition.

The hanging bridge was built in order to establish a link between the border villages. The bridge was an attraction for tourists.

Unfortunately, the bridge was damaged due to the overflowing water released from Harangi reservoir.

The confluence of Harangi and Cauvery rivers inundated the bridge.

The bridge has lost its stability and is not fit for use. Kamaralli resident Keerthiraj said that the iron rods of the bridge are broken and the cement sheets on the bridge have been dislocated.

A huge cement pillar which supports the bridge lies broken.

Hundreds of labourers who were dependent on the bridge are now inconvenienced.

Movement on the bridge has been prohibited and police have set up a barricade across the bridge.

Gangamma, a villager said that the villagers from the border areas of Periyapatana taluk have to now cover a distance of 20 kms to reach Kushalnagar.
