Go on, convict me soon, says ATM attacker

K Madhukar Reddy, the accused in the brutal attack on 53-year-old Corporation Bank employee Jyoti Uday in an ATM kiosk on November 19, 2013, asked the court to convict him without any delay.

“It is true that I attacked Jyoti Uday, I confess to my crime, I don’t need any advocate to argue my case and I don’t need any further hearing. I was convicted in Madanapalle prison and I am ready to be convicted here. I have a wife and children and don’t want a prolonged trial. So convict me today itself,” Reddy told the judge of the 65th City Civil and Sessions Court on Friday.

The SJ Park police produced Reddy before the court on the first day of the trial on Friday. Reddy (33), a native of Diguva Palli of Madanapalle in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, was arrested in February 2017 three and a half years after the attack.

Judge Rajeshwara observed that the offence he committed attracts a life sentence. “We are not sure that there would be a lesser conviction if you confess directly. There is a provision to appoint an advocate. Think about it and let this court know on next date of hearing on January 7,” the judge stated.

Reddy brutally attacked Jyoti Uday at the ATM kiosk opposite the BBMP head office in 2013 when she went to withdraw money. The CCTV footage went viral and the city police formed a special team of 300 to trace him. Finally, three-and-a-half years after the attack, he was arrested in a joint operation of the city police and their Chittoor counterparts.

After the attack, Reddy realised that the attack had attracted a lot of attention and fled to Kerala fearing arrest. After doing some petty jobs in Ernakulam for a year, he moved to Piler in Chittoor and Hyderabad and worked in hotels. He was arrested when he visited his native place Madanapalle on February 4, 2017.
