JOIN USThe bandh call given by pro Kannada organisations, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, JD(S) and others organisations evoked a mixed response in Kodagu, the birth place of river Cauvery, on Saturday.
There was good response for the bandh in Madikeri, Somwarpet, Shanivarasanthe, Virajpet and mixed response in Napoklu, Moornadu, Siddapura and other areas.
The district administration had declared holidays for schools and colleges. The government offices too wore a deserted look. Private buses remained off the road in Madikeri.
The members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Praveen Kumar Shetty bana) and JD(S) staged a protest, at Madikeri General Thimmaiah Circle and shouted slogans against the Centre.
Speaking to presspersons, MLC M C Nanaiah said “in the backdrop of scanty rainfall, the state is reeling under drought situation. In such a scenario, how to release water to Tamil Nadu?” he asked.
“If the State had received bountiful of rainfall, water could have been released to Tamil Nadu,” he said.
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar should have apprised the situation in Karnataka to the Centre. Unfortunately, he walked out of the meeting.
The Cauvery Monitoring Committee should prevail upon the CRA to withdraw the decision. It should submit a report by studying the situation in two states.
Karnataka Rakshana Vedike president Shivakumar said that water is supplied to several villages through tankers.
Unique protest
C B Vijaykumar and his team staged an unique protest by playing tabala, at Ganapathy temple premises in Kushalnagar. The artistes sang Kannada folk songs between 8 am and 5 pm.
