Delay in tax collection irks deputy commissioner

Last Updated 24 August 2016, 17:28 IST

Deputy Commissioner Richard Vincent D’Souza has expressed his discomfiture on the inordinate delay in the collection  of taxes by the local bodies and directed the officials to accelerate the process.

He was chairing a review meet on the local bodies at his office on Wednesday. He said as per the directions of the civic administration, the local bodies must collect taxes thereby channelise the same towards the development of urban regions. But, looking at the details of the tax collection, the lethargic attitude of officials is seen, the deputy commissioner  said.

The City Municipal Councils (CMC) of Madikeri, Virajpet, Kushalnagar and Somvarpet Town Panchayat have been lagging behind in the recovery of dues pertaining to industry license, drinking water supply tax, advertisement tax, commercial building rents and other taxes. The staff of the concerned places must work in coordination towards the collection of taxes, he said.

He meanwhile stressed upon providing housing facilities to civic workers, under Griha Bhagya scheme.

D’Souza also sought information on the home stays operating in Madikeri CMC limits, implementation of 13th financial programme and Ambedkar housing scheme.

He also told the assistant commissioner to submit a report on the collection of taxes.
The officials present at the meeting furnished information on the implementation of Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation schemes, maintenance of street lights, encroachment of government lands, solid waste management, survey of street vendors and distribution of identity cards to them.

CMC Commissioner B B Pushpavathi, Town Panchayat Chief Officer Krishna Prasad and Junior Engineer Shivkumar were present.
