Power failure, traffic jams dog Kodagu, Ch'magaluru

Paddy fields washed away in Virajpet taluk

There was a let-up in rains in many parts of Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu on Wednesday, after heavy showers in the past few days.

But, common man had to suffer hardships, with major problem being damage to electric poles. Large area of paddy fields in Virajpet taluk has been washed away due to rains.  

The movement of vehicles on Mudigere-Aldur road was affected when a tree fell on it at Hosalli near Aldoor in the wee hours of Wednesday. The vehicular movement was also affected on Kudregundi. 

In the last five days, Mudigere taluk has received 56.4 cm rainfall, Kottigehara—89.71 cm and Javali—58.85 cm rainfall. The patients in Gonibeedu PHC had a tough time without electricity supply.

The merchants were struggling to store medicines in drug houses, milk, curd and fruits at Kottigehara, Banakal, Balooru, Gonibeedu and Jannapura following power failure. The mobile towers were also affected in rural areas. 

The heavy rain that lashed Kalasa has forced the people to stay inside their houses.  With the copious rainfall in the catchment areas, the waterfalls have regained their glory.

River Bhadra and Somavathi are in spate. The schools and colleges have declared holiday for the last three days. The hobli has received 33 inch rainfall in the last one week. 

Rural areas in dark

A postman suffered injuries when a branch fell on his head at Nehru Circle in Kudremukh. Electricity supply was restored in several parts of Virajpet on Wednesday.

However, rural areas continue to live in darkness. Without the electricity and water supply, several hotels remained closed on Wednesday as well.

As many as 12 houses in Virajpet hobli, 10 in Hudikeri hobli and eight houses in Ponnampet were damaged in the rain.
