Students, youths shine at marshy field sports meet

Member of Legislative Council Shantheyanda Veena Acchaiah said sports activities help in building a sense of unity among people.

She was speaking at the 25th state-level marshy field sports meet organised by Kodagu Zilla Panchayat, Deparment of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Youth Hostel Association of India, Kodagu Zilla Yuva Okkoota and Madikeri, Virajpet and Somwarpet Taluk Yuva Okkoota at the paddy field of late C D Bopaiah at Kaggodlu here on Saturday.

The MLC said men, women and children should actively take part in sports. She said there has been decline in paddy cultivation in the district. To promote paddy cultivation, the government should announce incentive, Veena added.

‘Encourage sports meets’

Veena said the marshy field sports meet should also be encouraged. Bopaiah’s son C B Devaiah said there is a need to promote rural sports. Zilla Panchayat President B A Harish also spoke on the occasion. Galibeedu Yuva Sangha which won the best district-level Yuva Sangha award was felicitated.

Volleyball, football, tug-of-war competitions were held as part of the event. Apart from this, a 50 metre race for primary and lower primary schools, a 100 metre race for higher primary students, 200 metre race for high school students and 300 metre race for college students were held.
