Man, 3 kids drown in Kali river

Four members of a single family, including three children, drowned in River Kali at Bommanahalli village in the taluk on Monday.

The victims are Doolu Dundu Gawade, 42, Gayathri Doolu Gawade, 9, Krishna Doolu Gawade, 6, and Satish Biru Gawade, 7. The incident occurred when Dundu Gawade’s wife Ramibai was washing clothes in the river. The children, who were playing nearby, slipped and fell into the river. Ramibai jumped into the river to rescue them, but in vain. The woman too started drowning. Her husband Doolu Dundu Gawade, who was nearby, rescued them from drowning, but was washed away himself.

Ramibai was administered first aid in Haliyal and shifted to Hubballi for further treatment. Of the dead, the body of only Gayathri has been fished out. The search for the bodies of others is on. The Haliyal police have registered a case.
