Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanath Shetty directed the district administration and the District Wenlock Hospital officials in Mangaluru to submit a proposal to construct a 300-bed capacity new building in the hospital.

He was speaking after paying a visit to Wenlock and Lady Goschen hospitals on Friday.

He collected details on lack of basic facilities in these two hospitals. He met patients and spoke to them. The Lokayukta also inspected the quality of food being supplied at the hospital canteen.

Another building

As a large number of patients visit Wenlock Hospital, the Lokayukta sought details on the measures taken to construct new buildings. The Wenlock Hospital Superintendent Dr Rajeshwari Devi said that the work on 300-bed capacity building is in progress and would be completed by November.

In reply, the Lokayukta said that one 300-bed capacity building would not be sufficient and asked the superintendent to place a demand for another 300-bed capacity building for the hospital and also directed her to submit a detailed report on the same.

The Lokayukta also inspected the ICU and RAPCC at Wenlock and collected information on the services being offered.

He said the doctors and the staff at Wenlock Hospital are rendering good service. “The hospital has good facilities, but there is need for more facilities as a large number of patients visit the hospital. I have directed hospital authorities to submit a detailed report to the government on the requirement of the hospital,” he said.

At Lady Goschen

The Lokayukta visited all the wards a the Lady Goschen Hospital.

When he saw puerperal women sleeping on the corridors of the hospital, he asked why there was delay in inaugurating the new building.

The official said that the work on the new building is complete, however, there is shortage of fund for the purchase of equipment.

The Lokayukta directed the officials to put the new building to use within a month and submit a proposal seeking additional funds.

“I will also submit a detailed report on the problems being faced by the two hospitals in Mangaluru to the government,” he said.
