Large hailstones accompanied by rain lashed different parts of Kodagu district on Friday.

Gusty winds also damaged the standing crops. Heaps of hailstones were found on the roads, coffee estates, roof of the houses, arecanut and coconut plantations at Mullooru, Nidta, Ankanahalli, Dundalli, Doddalli Gudugalale and other areas.

Much to the jubilation of people, the hailstorm cheered the children, who were found collecting the hailstones and playing. Many were seen grabbing a fistful of ice in excitement.

The premises of the government school and a veterinary clinic in Ankanahalli were covered with hailstones.

Farmers holding the hailstones in their hand said, “For the first time, we have experienced a hailstorm. The crops have been damaged while we are happy after noticing hailstones.”

Robusta Coffee growers have expressed apprehension over rain affecting the harvest.

“Several berries have already fallen on the ground. The drying of the cherries has been affected by the rain. Even jowar is also affected by the rainfall,” said the farmers.

The coffee growers fear the untimely blossoming of coffee plants.

“With the increase in moisture content, green chilly plants will start rotting. The hailstones will damage them,” said grower B S Mohan from Doddabilaha.
