Mysore jail to get two VIP cells

Last Updated 09 July 2013, 18:51 IST

The Central Prisons in the city will soon have dedicated cells to accommodate prisoners in the ‘very important person’ category.

Two exclusive cells for the said section (undertrials or convicts) are being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs five lakh each, behind the health centre in the precincts of the jail.

Chief Superintendent of Prisons P N Jayasimha told Deccan Herald that facilities meant for VIPs like TV, cot, newspapers, and attached bathroom will be provided at these cells. While some of them are permanent facilities, the remaining are non-permanent and provided according to the directions of the court. Only those undertrials and convicts identified as VIP by the court will be able to avail the facility (cells) meant for them. Only one person can be accommodated in each of the cells, the officer said.

The exterior works are almost complete and what remains is the interior work - flooring, electricity connection and other works. It may take another six months to complete them, the officer said.

With this, Mysore jail will become the second jail after Bangalore to boast of the facility. The jail in the State capital has six VIP cells.

Though the Mysore jail has a total of 40 barracks, including five for women, barrack number 19, which is bereft of the aforementioned facilities, is being used as a VIP cell. The last VIP prisoner incarcerated in that cell for a day was controversial godman Swami Nityananda.

Now, sharp shooter and associate of underworld don Chhota Rajan, Bachcha Khan, has been kept in the barrack under watch and ward system through close circuit TV (CCTV) camera.
