Rains abate in Belagavi, but bridges still submerged

As the monsoon rainfall in South West Maharashtra and Konkan region lessened, inflow to river Krishna and its tributaries receded on Sunday.

Inflow to river Krishna and its tributaries reduced to 1.73 lakh cusecs from 1.79 lakh cusecs at Kallol village, Chikkodi taluk.

Though inflow diminished, river Krishna and its tributaries are still flowing at full levels.

Hipparagi barrage is receiving about 2.05 lakh cusec water and the same amount of water is being released to Alamatti reservoir, according to Chikkodi sub-division Assistant Commissioner Geeta Koulagi.

The Jatrat-Bhivashi bridge built across river Vedaganga is likely to open for traffic in case rain further subsides. Currently half feet of water is flowing over the bridge.

All the six low-lying bridges built across river Krishna and its tributaries have continued to remain underwater in Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi district.

Due to the inundation of those bridges, people are using alternate roads to commute to nearby villages. If rains decrease further, these bridges might open for traffic soon.
