The officers of Mangaluru CGST (Office of Commissioner of Central Excise and Central Tax), Preventive Unit on Friday unearthed a GST evasion case of around Rs 17 crore. Two persons have been arrested in this connection.

The sleuths attached to CGST preventive wing analysed documents and digital returns filed by some traders. The analysis indicated that an organised group was issuing invoices without the actual supply of arecanuts.

Searches were conducted in Sirsi, Puttur, Mangaluru, Chitradurga and other places. Many premises were found not existing, completely empty or without any furniture/computers/records, indicating that the premises were being used only as a front to get registration under GST and carry out their illegal activities.

The arrested. Suresh Chatrabhoja Bhanushali and Shridhar Hegde, have been remanded in judicial custody till April 1.
