Smart parking facility at 87 roads in Bengaluru

Last Updated 09 February 2019, 12:57 IST

Conceptualised previously and missing out on several deadlines, the smart parking system for vehicles has yet again been proposed in the State Budget.

Mulling solution to the surging number of vehicles across Bengaluru, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy proposed to implement parking facility at selected 87 roads, accommodating about 10,000 vehicles.

However, even as the project appears to be ambitious, there is no mention of the allocation of funds for the purpose.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had submitted a proposal for the project to the government last year. But G Parameshwara, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister, had scrapped the proposal citing unscientific grounds. The DCM had instructed the civic body to reissue the tender as there were a few technical glitches.

According to the civic body, the parking spaces will be equipped with sensors installed along the roads, which will send information about available slots to the display boards on streets, and to a dedicated mobile app. The drivers will come to know about parking availability through the display boards and the app. The driver can pay the fee through the app or on the spot.

“The project will regulate the parking crises in the city. It will be taken up under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. A private company will bear the entire cost of the project and will pay an annual rent of Rs 31 crore to the civic body,” N Manjunath Prasad, BBMP Commissioner, said.

The company that has received the tender will construct the parking infrastructure, develop the software and equipment along with running the smart parking.

“The first phase of the project worth Rs 85 crore is categorised into three groups of roads, all in the Central Business District, with differential parking rates on a total of 87 roads,” he added.
