Akhilesh-Maya to share stage at swearing-in

The new-found bonhomie between one-time political foes, BSP supremo Mayawati and SP president Akhilesh Yadav, will be on display during the swearing in of Kumarswamy as chief minister.

Leaders of the two parties confirmed that Akhilesh and Mayawati would be present at the event.

Though Akhilesh and Mayawati, who have been bitter political rivals in Uttar Pradesh for the past three decades, had met here after SP's resounding victory in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-polls with the support of BSP, they would be sharing the stage for the first time.

Both the leaders have already declared that they will fight the forthcoming LS polls in 2019 in alliance and the seat-sharing talks are likely to begin in the near future.

''There is no bitterness now. Bahenji (Mayawati) has already said that she does not nurture any grudge against Akhilesh,'' a senior BSP leader told DH.

The sharing of the stage assumes political significance as it signals an end to their political and personal rivalry after the bitter parting of ways 23 years back, when SP workers had attacked the BSP supremo following her decision to withdraw support to the then SP-BSP alliance government in the state. But she escaped unhurt.

Though BSP has not declared open support for the SP nominee Tabassum Hasan in Kairana LS by-poll scheduled for May 28, the workers of the party have been campaigning for her.
