Farmers oppose Supreme Court order

Last Updated 03 May 2018, 20:53 IST

Farmer leader and Karnataka Rajya Kabbu Belegarara Sangha president Kurubur Shanthakumar, on Thursday, urged the Supreme Court to review its order, directing the Karnataka government to release 4 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water to Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to reporters, Shanthakumar said that it is not right on the part of the judge to give the verdict that affects the interests of the farmers of Karnataka.

“The order should be reviewed. While the dams have no water, how is it possible to release water? The government is not in a position to take a decision owing to the Assembly election,” he said.

The farmers have been facing drought for the last three years and this year too, the state has not received sufficient rain, he said.
