The government is committed to implementing the Sarojini Mahishi committee report that recommended reservation for local residents in public and private sectors, Kannada and Culture Minister C T Ravi said on Wednesday.
However, Ravi said reserving jobs in the private sector would be a challenge as such legislation might force companies to move out of the state.
One of the primary challenges is the absence of skilled labour, due to which the government will have to consult with the private sector, before taking any decision.
He noted that the report can be implemented only after skilling the local population for the jobs in the industry. Or else, it (implementing the report) may lead to the closure of industries, as companies will venture to find the required talent elsewhere, he said.
Lashing out at Congress leader Siddaramaiah, who extended “full support” to Kannada organisations for the implementation of the report, Ravi questioned why he did not implement the recommendations of the report during his tenure as chief minister. “Was he eating groundnuts?” Ravi asked.
