The Gandhi Chowk police have arrested two persons on charge of forgery and cheating. According to the police, the duo had used fake letterheads and forged the signature of Union minister Ramesh Jigjinagi to get the grants released from MPLAD funds. Kashinath Gangaram Rathod, the founder-president of Banjara Vidyavardhaka Sangha, and S R Galagali, a record-keeper of MPLAD funds at DC office, are the arrested, said Superintendent of Police Prakash Nikkam.

Kashinath had submitted nine fake letterheads of Union minister to the DC. The fake letterheads, with forged signature of the minister, mentioned that grants amounting to Rs 38 lakh be released from the MPLAD funds towards payment to contractors for various works. During the investigation, it was found out that works worth Rs 26 lakh were carried out in Kashinath’s education institute, the SP said. There is a provision under the law that works, which were not executed for some reasons, can be replaced with other works. Kashinath made use of the provision, using the forged letterheads of the Union minister, also Vijayapura MP, and diverted the works to his institution, the SP explained.

Involvement of several government officials is suspected. More skeletons are expected to tumble out of the cupboard after the probe, he said.
