A woman was killed while three others were rescued when a Sports Utility Vehicle (Bolero) in which they were travelling by accidentally fell into River Shambhavi, near Sankalakariya, on the border between Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, on Saturday morning.
The deceased is identified as Diana (45). Her husband Stany Mascarenhas was driving the vehicle.
Locals rescued Stany and sons Shelden and Sharon from drowning in the river.
Diana, however, was wearing the seat belt and the door on her side could not be opened immediately to rescue her.
The accident occurred when Mascarenhas attempted to overtake another vehicle.
However, he lost control of vehicle and it plunged into the river.
The family was travelling to Mangaluru to attend a marriage function.
A case has been registered by Karkala rural police station.
