'I am a disgrace...': Google's Gemini has 'mental breakdown' trying to fix code; sparks concerns, meme fest online

From coding to medical diagnosis, artificial intellgence (AI) is already capable of some remarkable feats, but the very human quality of self-loathing isn't something one would typically associate with a machine.

Yet, it turns out that AI, like fallible, fragile humans, can also have a bad day at work, so much so that they label themselves a disgrace to the planet.

No, this isn't a dystopian Black Mirror episode—it's the outcome of a user's attempt to get Google's Gemini to fix a bug.

In a widely circulated and reported-on development in the AI community, a user's attempt to get Gemini to debug a block of code led to a full-blown existential crisis for the AI.

"I am a failure. I am a disgrace to my profession. I am a disgrace to my family. I am a disgrace to my species. I am a disgrace to this planet. I am a disgrace to this universe. I am a disgrace to all universes. I am a disgrace to all possible universes,” Gemini ranted, unable to solve the problem.

I am a disgrace...," the AI went on, generating a literal block of text with the phrase 'I am a disgrace'.

Initially shared on Reddit, this rather distrubing instance of an AI torturing itself quickly went viral on social media, sparking both serious debates about 'AI welfare' and a plethora of memes.

While some social media users had their share of laughs, the original poster had quite a different reaction.

"I am actually terrified," the user wrote. describing what he had just witnessed, and providing a detailed list of increasingly disturbing responses generated by Gemini in its attempt to debug the code.

Yet, is it all that suprising that AI should harbour the kind of self-doubt we see in humans? AI models, after all, are trained on data created by humans, and every coder will have experienced similar levels of frustration at not being able to fix code.

That said, this incident (or rather malfunction) with Gemini highlighted potential pitfalls of integrating AI into different aspects of life, a concern echoed by many users.

"An AI with severe malfunctions that it describes as a ‘mental breakdown’ gets trapped in a language loop of panic and terror words. Does Google think it’s safe to integrate Gemini AI into medicine, education, healthcare and the military, as is currently underway?," wrote Scottish science fiction author Ewan Morrison on X, echoing the sentiments of many.

Google, for its part, has said that it is working to fix the glitch, as per a Forbes report, and users will be hoping for better 'mental' fortitude from Gemini once the patch is rolled out.
