Apple iOS 18.3 update with Visual Intelligence feature released to iPhone

The new 1.3GB iOS 18.3 update brings new Apple Intelligence features and also bug fixes to all eligible iPhones.

Apple has rolled out the much-awaited iOS 18.3 update to all eligible iPhones worldwide.

The 1.3GB update brings new Apple Intelligence features and also bug fixes.

The most notable feature is the Visual intelligence with Camera Control. It is exclusive to only the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models. With this users can just point the camera to an object and get information about it.

At the start, it will be able to identify plants and animals. Also, it can add an event to the Calendar from a poster or flyer.

The new update also brings on-device AI-powered Notification Summaries (all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max). It will automatically summarise all notifications in short paragraphs to give context to the messages and this saves time, as the user doesn't have to waste time scrolling the lock screen to read all the messages.

Further, the smart notification feature will be able to better distinguish between SMS and app notifications by using italicised text as well as the glyph.

For now, Apple has temporarily disabled notification summaries for News & Entertainment apps, as it has bugs and needs to be reworked.

Apple Intelligence will improve the user experience on the iPhones.

As far as the bug fixes are concerned, iOS 18.3 resolves the issue in the calculator app, which used to repeat the last mathematical operation when the user taps the equals sign again and this used to result in wrong answers.

The update also fixes an issue where the keyboard at random times used to disappear when initiating a typed Siri request.

And, iOS 18.3 resolves an issue where audio playback use continues until the song ends even after closing Apple Music.

The new iOS update also plugs several security loop holes in Photos app, AirPlay and core software components such as CoreMedia, ImageIO, Kernel, ARKit and more, which could have enabled hacker to remote execute malicious apps and steal data from the device.

Similarly, iPadOS 18.3 with the same new features and bug fixes are being rolled out on iPads.

Here's how to install the iOS/iPadOS 18.3 on iPhones and iPads:

Via OTA (Over-The-Air)

Prerequisite: Users' who want to install the update directly onto the device through OTA, make sure there is enough storage space and the device should have more than 50% battery life, before initiating the download of the new iOS/iPad update.

Step 1: Settings >> General >> Software update

Via manual installation through Apple iTunes

Prerequisite: Make sure to back up your iPhone/iPad with either iCloud or iTunes before initiating the download procedure. Also, your PC must have the latest version of the iTunes app. If not, Go to About and then Check for Updates or visit iTunes.com.

Step 1: Launch iTunes on your Mac or PC.

Step 2: Insert your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it isn't already.

Step 3: Tap on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in the top left navigation.

Step 4: Tap on the Check for Update button in the first section that contains information about your device and alternately you can click Restore instead if you'd like to do a clean wipe with updated software.

Step 5: An update should be recognized, click on Download and Update in the popup menu and agree to the terms or conditions.

Step 6: Unlock your device with your passcode if prompted to continue with the upgrade.
