Theft of mobile phones, logo of high-end cars: 5 held

The Mangaluru East police arrested five persons including three mobile shop owners in connection with the theft of mobile phones of security personnel serving in various apartments and also logo of high end cars.

According to the police, the arrested are students Vishal Nayak (18), Abhishek Poojary (18), mobile shop owners Abdul Sinan (35), Mohammed Savad (30), Sadakathulla (35). All the arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.

Vishal and Abhishek were engaged in stealing mobile phones of security personnel in apartments at Kadri, Urwa and Haripadavu in the last six months. They were selling the stolen phones to shops in Dubai Bazar and Saibeen Complex in Mangaluru. Based on the CCTV footage of the apartments, the police arrested the students, who in turn revealed the names of the shopkeepers.

The police seized six smart phones worth Rs 60,000 and 11 logo of high-end cars worth Rs 20,000 and a two-wheeler used for committing the crime.

Gambling: 7 arrested

The Vittal Police arrested seven persons engaged in gambling at a house at Chiminiyadka in Bantwal taluk.

The arrested are Radhakrishna Shetty from Ichlangodu in Kasargod, Vijayan of Bela in Badiadka, Chandran of Bela in Badiadka, Babu Poojary of Enmakaje in Kasargod, Kamalaksha of Enmakaje, Pradeep of Anangooru in Kasargod and Steven D’Souza of Enmakaje.

The police have seized Rs 65,960 used for gambling, said SP Ravikanthe Gowda.

Assault victim dies

A man, who was reportedly assaulted two days ago by local residents for stealing a water drum, died at Daregudde on Saturday.

The deceased is Anil (52).

On charges of stealing a water drum from the house of Girija Shetty, Anil was assaulted on July 19. Later, he was asked to return the drum to its original place.

According his wife Champa, Anil had gone for work on Friday. However, he developed severe stomach ache and started vomiting on Saturday morning. Although he was rushed to hospital, the doctor declared him dead.

In her complaint, Champa has alleged that Anil was severely assaulted which led to his death. She has named Dinesh Shetty and Boggu Shetty for assaulting Anil.

Body found

An unidentified body was found at the divider of the national highway at Ucchila on Saturday.

According to police, the deceased is aged 55-60 years and is suspected to have been killed when an unknown vehicle hit him during night or wee hours on Saturday.

A case has been registered in Padubidri police station.
