Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp on Tuesday announced the launch of a group calling feature, for both voice and video options, on iOS and Android devices.

The company which launched voice call three years back has a user base of 1.5 billion monthly users and claims over two billion minutes of calls via its service each day.

The company ensures the voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, which ensures security for all chats. The calls made will be logged in the call history tab, next to the chats.

WhatsApp piloted the project in October last year in beta version for select users. Facebook announced this feature for WhatsApp at its F8 developer conference in May.

In a release the company said, over the last couple years, people have enjoyed making voice and video calls on WhatsApp.

"In fact, our users spend over 2 billion minutes on calls per day. We're excited to announce that group calls for voice and video are coming to WhatsApp starting today," states the company.

"You can make a group call with up to four people total - anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new 'add participant' button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call," the company said.

WhatsApp is expecting the move will help the company take on Skype that has supported the same functionality for some time.
