<p>A woman in <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/china">China</a>, along with her accomplices, has been convicted for attempting to defraud her husband by setting him up with a prostitute, divorcing him on that basis and pocketing the bride price.</p><p>According to a <ins><a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/people-culture/trending-china/article/3291386/china-wife-sets-sex-worker-trap-sham-husband-bid-divorce-him-pocket-bride-price?module=top_story&pgtype=subsection">report</a></ins> in the <em>South China Morning Post</em>, The woman, Xiong, and her boyfriend, Li and their two friends Zhou and Song, were involved in the crime against Bao, a man from the eastern Jiangsu province.</p><p>Xiong and Li were in debt, and as such, they met Zhou and Song online, who told them that they could help secure loans. The duo instead presented the couple with a marriage fraud scheme.</p><p>In China, grooms offer the bride a bride price before their marriage as a traditional wedding ritual. In the region where they conducted the fraud, grooms usually offer a bride price of 100,000 yuan (Rs 11.65 lakh). Thus, the men persuaded the woman to go ahead with the crime.</p><p>“I was afraid and I did not dare to join their scheme,” Xiong told the court, SCMP reported.</p><p>“But they kept on persuading me that I could divorce smoothly and I do not need to return the money. My boyfriend also asked me not to panic. Xiong then left the restaurant while Li set about to convince Bao to sleep with a prostitute.</p><p>Bao, already suspicious of the whole situation, called the cops.</p><p>The court sentenced Xiong, Li, Zhou and Song to jail for fraud, with terms ranging from 3 years to 3 years and 10 months and they were ordered to pay 20,000-30,000 yuan (Rs 2.3 L to Rs 3.5 L) each to Bao to compensate for his financial loss.</p><p>A person from the matchmaking agency has also been arrested for fabricating Xiong's personal information and introducing her to Bao. He is yet to be sentenced.</p>
