The army jawan, who has emerged as the key suspect in the killing of a police inspector in mob frenzy in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, has been detained by his unit in Sopore area of north Kashmir on Saturday.

According to sources, Jitendra Malik alias Jeetu Fauji was detained by the 22 Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore town on Friday night and was subsequently handed over to a special investigation team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Jeetu Fauji, who is posted in Srinagar, was in his hometown Bulandshahr on a 15-day leave when the mob violence took place.

Sources said he fled from Bulandshahr the same evening inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a civilian were killed and reached Sopore. The role of Malik in the killings surfaced after a purported video of the mob violence circulating on social media allegedly shows him opening fire.

Inspector Subodh and his team had reportedly gone to the village to tackle the violence following the alleged recovery of animal bones from a sugarcane field in Uttar Pradesh’s communally sensitive Bulandshahr district on Monday.
