JeM chief Masood Azhar bedridden: report

Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed's chief Masood Azhar is bed-ridden with a life-threatening illness for over a year and a half, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.

The daily quoted officials from the Indian intelligence agencies, who said that Azhar's younger brothers, Rauf Asghar and Athar Ibrahim, have divided operations of the JeM between themselves and are carrying out jihadist activities in India and Afghanistan.

According to the report, Azhar is believed to have been treated at the Combined Military Hospital in Rawalpindi for a spinal cord and renal condition.

Azhar is accused of carrying out major terror attacks inside India, including the 2016 Uri base attack in Kashmir, which left several soldiers dead. He is also said to be responsible for the 2001 Parliament attack.

India was forced to release Azhar in 1999 when an Indian Airlines plane, IC-814, was hijacked with the backing of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and the ISI.

Azhar was one of the three militant leaders exchanged for the passengers.

India has repeatedly attempted to have Azhar declared a terrorist under the Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council with the backing of the US, France and Britain.

However, China vetoed the move. The JeM is already part of the UN's banned terror outfits list.
