This nutrient-packed, healthy smoothie is rich in iron, protein, fibre and lignans and can help with weight loss, cancer prevention, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes management. The smoothie can be whipped up in five minutes and fills you with enough energy to get you through the day.

Bananas are rich in a type of fiber called pectin, which is helpful in maintaining blood sugar levels. They are also a great source of potassium and magnesium, minerals that are essential for heart health, and their antioxidant content has been linked to lower risk of heart disease.

Spinach is rich in vitamin K. It is, therefore, important for strengthening bones by increasing the amount of calcium in the body. It also reduces the chances of bone fractures. Its high potassium content can also help in lowering blood pressure.

Flax seeds are rich in dietary fibre and can improve your digestive health. They can also keep one fuller for longer periods of time which prevents snacking and helps in weight control.

Ingredients:

2 large bananas, peeled, sliced and frozen

1 handful of spinach

1/2 a large apple, chopped

1/2 cup milk

5-7 large strawberries, sliced

1 tbsp ground flax

Makes two servings

Procedure:

Blend together the bananas, spinach, apple milk, flax and strawberries until smooth and serve.

For a layered look, blend one banana with the spinach, apple, flax, and half the milk and pour into a tall glass. Then blend together the other banana with the strawberries and the rest of the milk and pour on top of the spinach and apple smoothie. Serve immediately.
