Border Security Force  troopers on Wednesday morning shot dead an intruder and recovered 17 kg heroin and fake currency with a face value of over Rs 10 lakh near an outpost along the India-Pakistan border in the Amritsar sector in Punjab.

BSF officials here said an intruder was killed in cross-firing between the BSF and at least three people, who were trying to sneak into India in thick fog along the fenced border.

The BSF troopers challenged the intruders, who were across the fence. The incident took place near the Bheropal border outpost, 35 km from here.

Officials said that the recovered heroin was worth crores of rupees in the international market. A senior BSF official said they will continue to keep strict vigil just in case more intruders decide to enter Punjab.
