Development Minister Gopal Rai held a public meeting to assess the situation of rising vegetable prices on Wednesday where hundreds of people complained about hoarding and profiteering by retailers.

The session was held at  Azadpur Mandi in north Delhi.

Prices of most vegetables showed a spike in past fortnight after the unexpected rains
in Delhi and neighbouring states.

Some vegetables become costlier by at least 20 to 50 per cent. Popular winter vegetables like peas, cabbage and cauliflower also started pinching the common man.

Rai assured the people about the measures being taken to check the prices and said a new system of eliminating agents will be put in place to ensure that the farmers directly sell their produce.

The new system will also help bring down the prices of vegetables, said the minister.
