Last Updated 12 April 2014, 19:20 IST

Actor and politician Nandamuri Balakrishna, the 53-year-old son of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder N T Rama Rao, will contest from the Hindupur Assembly segment in Anantapur district of Rayalaseema region, a constituency his father once represented three times.

Balakrishna’s elder brother Harikrishna, too, represented Hindupur in the past.

Several fans and supporters of the actor gathered near party president N Chandrababu Naidu’s Jubilee Hills residence and celebrated the news by cutting a cake. They swore that their “hero” will break earlier records by winning the Hindupur seat with a thumping majority. For the past few days, rumours were abuzz that Balakrishna, who had not yet received a ticket, was keen on contesting the elections. This prompted his fans to stage protests across the state, urging TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu to field the actor.

According to party sources, Chandrababu Naidu reportedly gave Balakrishna the green signal to contest from the Hindupur Assembly constituency after meeting him here on Saturday.
