<p>A 17-year-old girl tried to commit suicide after her lover refused to marry her. The 21-year-old youth has now been arrested for allegedly raping the girl on the pretext of marriage.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The arrest was made after locals approached senior police officers. They alleged that local police had initially refused to take action against the accused.<br /><br />The girl lives with her elder brother in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri. According to police, she was a in a relationship with a neighbour named Aakash for the past few months.<br /><br />“It is alleged that the accused developed physical relation promising marriage,” said a police officer. On January 5, the girl told Aakash that she was pregnant. She requested that they must get married, but Aakash allegedly refused to inform his family.<br /><br />In her statement, the girl told police that she threatened to commit suicide. But it had no effect on Aakash. The girl apparently consumed some poisonous substance on January 8.<br /><br />“She was found unconscious when her brother returned home in the evening,” the officer added. Her brother informed police and rushed her to Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.<br /><br />The girl regained consciousness at the hospital. She narrated her ordeal to her brother and her statement was also recorded by police.<br /><br />Locals, however, allege that police did not take any action against Aakash. “The policemen were acting in favour of Aakash and tried to force the girl for settlement,” Manish, a local told Deccan Herald.<br /><br />The girl’s brother sells vegetables on a hand cart in Sultanpuri. Locals decided to approach politicians and senior police officers on noticing the helplessness of the siblings.<br /><br />Aakash was arrested on Sunday after an FIR was registered.</p>
