Jarwal joins 8 others in list of booked AAP MLAs

Cases deal with political protests or molestation

With the registration of a sexual assault case against AAP legislator Prakash Jarwal, the tally of ruling party legislators on the wrong side of the law has stretched to nine.

The Aam Aadmi Party has maintained all along that its legislators are being framed by Delhi Police on the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for political gains.

None of the AAP legislators booked by police is currently in jail or convicted. Most of the cases deal with molestation complaints and political protests or rioting.

Jarwal, MLA from Deoli, was booked by Greater Kailash police for assaulting a 45-year-old woman last month.

Last month, Sangam Vihar legislator Dinesh Mohaniya was arrested on the charges of molestation and sexual harassment.  

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the arrest a flashback to the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975.

Domestic violenceThe other legislators who have been booked by Delhi Police include former law minister and Malviya Nagar legislator Somnath Bharti. 

He faces cases of alleged attempt to murder, domestic violence and cheating registered on a complaint by his wife Lipika Mitra.

Bharti was arrested on September 29, 2015 and is currently out on bail.The practising lawyer also faces two other cases registered in connection with the infamous “raid” that he led against African women in south Delhi’s Khirki Extension colony in 2014. 

The incident even sparked diplomatic outrage.

Another former law minister and Tri Nagar legislator Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested on June 10, 2015 after being booked by Hauz Khas police for allegedly using a fake law degree for enrolling himself with the Delhi Bar Council.

Land grabbingKondli legislator Manoj Kumar was arrested on July 9, 2015 in connection with four FIRs against him related to alleged cases of land grabbing and outraging a woman’s modesty.

Model Town legislator Akhilesh Pati Tripathi was booked in six cases including one of allegedly molesting and misbehaving with a woman, and rioting.

He was arrested in November 2015. 

In some cases, he has got relief from trial courts.

Hari Nagar legislator Jagdeep Singh was arrested on May 29 for an incident related to alleged assault on the manager of a waste management company.

Vikaspuri  legislator Mahinder Yadav was arrested on January 29 in an alleged rioting case. Delhi Cantonment legislator Surinder Singh arrested on August 21 for allegedly making casteist remarks against a sanitary inspector of the New Delhi Municipal Council and obstructing him in his work.
