A youth  in his mid-twenties was killed and dumped in a drain in north Delhi’s Inderpuri. Police haven’t been able to identify the victim.

The only clue they have is a bracelet on his arm bearing a girl’s name. After police were informed, it took over two hours to bring the body out as the fire department officials allegedly refused to do the job.

When the body was hauled out finally, it emerged that a rock tied to his leg was used to keep the body submerged. The body had rotted over the days because of which the rope had slipped off the leg.

The body was discovered by a passer-by at 12.30 pm on Wednesday when he noticed a head popping out of the muddy drain. A call was made to the police control room, after which a team was dispatched to the spot.

“Since the water was very dirty, no one from the public agreed to dive into the drain to bring the body out. Even the fire department refused to help, saying their work included rescuing live people, not dead ones,” a police officer investigating the case told Deccan Herald.

Professionals who dive into the Yamuna to pick coins and other valuables were finally summoned and they fished out the body.

“The victim’s throat had been slit and he was stabbed in his abdomen. His body had rotted and we suspect he could have been killed as early as 10 days ago,” said the officer.

There were no clothes on the body, thus negating any chances of finding documents that could help identify him. A bracelet, the lone accessory on his body, bore the name ‘Keerti’. Police at Sarai Rohilla police station registered a case of murder and began probe.

Police stations in Delhi and adjoining areas have been contacted to find out if anyone matching the description of the victim has been missing for the past two weeks. These efforts have met with no success so far, said police.
