A four-year-old boy was crushed to death by a reversing vehicle when he was playing in front of his house in Amruthahalli on Sunday afternoon.

The victim, Nagaraj, was the only son of Ramesh and Chithra, who are daily wage labourers. The couple hail from Ballari and are living in a shed in Amruthahalli.

According to the police, around 2.30 pm, Nagaraj was playing along the roadside near their shed when the goods vehicle ran over him. Ramesh and Chithra, who were at home, ran out on hearing their son scream. They rushed Nagaraj to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot, fearing public wrath.

The police said the driver was trying to reverse in a rash manner and failed to notice the boy playing behind.

The Hebbal traffic police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing accidental death, and seized the vehicle. The police are on the lookout for the driver.
