The Girinagar police on Tuesday arrested an autorickshaw driver, who impersonated an income tax inspector and made away with a car.

The police have identified the accused as Deepak Kumar alias Raj Kumar, 32, a resident of Ittamadu near Banashankari. They recovered a car worth Rs 5 lakh.

On November 3, Kumar posing as a tax inspector, called the Just Dial search services and requested for a cab to go to the airport. He asked them to send the cab to Big Bazaar in Puttenahalli, JP Nagar at 5 pm. A cab attached to I-Cabs was sent to Puttenahalli.

Kumar introduced himself as an Income Tax inspector to the cab driver. He told him to head to Woodlands hotel to pick up a friend. He said they were both catching a flight to Hyderabad. He took the driver through Richmond Circle, Residency Road and surrounding areas. He then said the plan was cancelled and asked the driver to take him back to Puttenahalli.

On the way, Kumar told the driver that he had changed his mind and directed him towards Hoskerehalli Ring Road, saying he would go to his sister’s house. Around 10.45 pm, he asked the driver to stop the car near a bar and sent him to buy cigarettes, said the police.

While the driver was away, Kumar fled with the car. The driver raised an alarm and passersby tried to chase the car in vain.

The driver informed his owner Puttaswamy and lodged a police complaint. The police tracked Kumar’s mobile phone, analysed his call records and arrested him.
