The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), will host a ‘Plog Run’ to make Bengaluru plastic waste free.

Nearly 5,000 runners are expected to participate in the run on October 2, 2018. The civic body aims to make it into the Guiness Book of World Records, if 10,000 runners take part in the event. The Plog run is an activity where joggers pick plastic waste on the go.

BBMP has identified 50 designated spots in the city including Adugodi, C V Raman Nagar, Hoodi, Hebbal, Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar, Uttarahalli, JP Nagar, Padmanabha Nagar and other areas.

The joggers will cover a distance of three km from the start point and collect waste at the finish. The plastic waste collected, will be sent to the dry waste collection centers.

BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said that this was an initiative by the BBMP and NGOs to create awareness among people to reduce single-use of plastic.

“Recently, we issued an advisory to wedding halls against single-use plastic water bottles. This is an effort to create awareness among people to reduce the use of plastic,” said Prasad.

Organisations such as Go Native, Namma Nimma Cycle Foundation, United Way Bangalore and Let’s Be the Change, who are involved in sustainable practices, are associated with BBMP for this drive.

Prasad also said that the BBMP would conduct a similar drive on January 1st, 2019 at 100 designated spots.
