Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre (MCCC) has been launched at the hospital on Tuesday to raise awareness about breast cancer and to provide advanced cancer care.

The centre is equipped with ultra-modern digital mammography with Tomosynthesis technology to enhance the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities for screening and treating breast cancer and a dedicated surgical Lymphoedema Clinic.

Dr Ashok B C, consultant plastic surgeon and also trained to provide quality treatment protocols for cancer patients said that about 1/3 of people who undergo total mastectomy had no treatment earlier except physiotherapy to deal with Lymphodema of limbs. Now there are other options that can bypass the blockage while removing lymph nodes during a mastectomy. This has been successfully done on more than twenty-five patients who are leading a normal life.

Other treatments like Lymph Nodes transfer, wherein a lymph node can be transferred from a part of the body to the affected part for a smooth drain in the body, are also available. Manipal has so far successfully done four lymph node transfers.

The ICG machine with the help of a dye helps the doctor identify where the blockage is and help in specific attention to the node for further treatment.

The MCCC was inaugurated by Kannada movie actors, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, Priyanka Upendra and Aniruddha Jatkar.
