Fire and Emergency Services submitted an inspection report on BBMP's work at the KR Market as directed by the high court in the last hearing.

The high court is hearing a petition by the Flower Merchants' Association and others against shops set up in public passages and fire exits at the market. Petitioners argued that the market was so congested, it had disrupted the airflow and could cause fire accidents.

The fire department said it inspected the market on April 8 and found ramps have been cleared and civil work undertaken by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike was under progress.

The report states the BBMP cleared the allowed setbacks around the market, consisting sheet stretchers made of metal, combustible materials like plastic and bamboo for selling fruits, flowers and household articles.

However, fire detection systems, fire extinguishers, signage and fire alarms are yet to be set up.

The department informed the HC that occupants and staff at the market need training in fire prevention and firefighting skills.

The court has adjourned the hearing.
