‘Restrict vehicle speed on Yeshwantpur flyover’

The 90-degree curvature at Yeshwantpur is likely to lead to more accidents in the coming days if measures are not taken to enforce the 30 kilometres per hour speed specified by the flyover’s design, an IISc study has warned.

“The Yeshwantpur flyover is designed for slow moving and highly dense traffic. Therefore, no superelevation has been provided. However, this has proven to be a disadvantage during non-peak hours,” says the study by IISc’s Transportation Engineering Lab researchers led by Prof Ashish Verma.

Verma said the two recent accidents were only visible signs of a problem that will results in more accidents in the coming days and minor accidents do not get attention and fade away.

“We have recommended a set of actions, including installation of reflectors, directional signages and reminders of speed restrictions,” he said.

Crash barriers

The safety audit report also recommends crash barriers on the side of the flyover, especially on the left side of vehicles moving from Yeshwantpur towards Sankey Road.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) P Harishekaran, who received the study, said the department had already started working on some of the recommendations.

“We have noticed that the slope on the approach roads had led to vehicles cruising at high speed on the flyover. I will look into the IISc report to see what additional measures can be implemented,” he said.
