Sampige, Mallige, Parijaata, Kanaka: Bengaluru suburban rail corridors may be named after flowers

These flowers have been chosen so that their names combine to form the project name Sa-M-Par-Ka, which translates to 'connectivity' in Kannada

Bengaluru's much-awaited 148-km suburban rail corridors may be called by the Kannada names of a few flowers, Times of India reported, quoting sources.

The city's four suburban rail corridors will most likely go by the names of Sampige (Champa), Mallige (Jasmine), Parijaata (Coral Jasmine), and Kanaka (Crossandra), Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE) sources informed TOI.

K-RIDE is a joint venture between the state government and the Ministry of Railways.

According to sources, the flowers have been chosen such that they combine to form the project name Sa-M-Par-Ka, which translates to 'connectivity' in Kannada.

The KSR Bengaluru City (Bengaluru's main railway station opposite Majestic Bus Stand)-Yelhanka-Devanahalli corridor will be called Sampige, while the Byappanahalli-Yeshwantpur-Chikkabanavara corridor will be known as Mallige. The Kengeri-Cantonment-Whitefield corridor will be named the Parijaata corridor, while the Heelalige-Yelahanka-Rajanukunte corridor is likely to be known as Kanaka.

Work is expected to begin first on the Kanaka and Mallige corridors, the report added.

The city's metro rail network, Namma Metro, in contrast, is named after colours — green, purple, yellow, pink, and light blue.

The Rs 16,000-crore project headed by K-RIDE spans 148 kilometres and will have 57 stations across all four corridors.
