Shaneshwara idol found in Varthur kodi

The statue is not made of black stone, which is typically used to make idols.

A damaged idol of Lord Shaneshwara was found during excavation works for constructing the waste weir in the north-eastern side of Varthur lake.

The locals and Bangalore Development Authority officials were shocked to find the idol during the early morning hours of Friday.

The mutilated idol is said to be around 15-20 years old and the locals do not want it to be thrown away.

This is the first time such an idol has been found in the Varthur lake bed. This is also the first time BDA has dug up to 20 feet to construct the waste weir.

Earlier relics of history like canons or idols were found during digging for Namma Metro.

BDA Executive Engineer Mahadeva Gowda said that they are not aware of its origin and so far no one has contacted them claiming ownership. No decision of what to do with the idol has been taken. It will be discussed with the BDA commissioner and chairman. It is currently kept near the construction site.

Gowda added that it is possible that someone could have immersed the idol in water because it was damaged. There is no temple near the site also.

However, locals have said that they will take the idol and keep it at a significant place.

The locals also pointed out that villages in and around Varthur lake have two Shaneshwara temples. A new Shaneshwara temple was built only 15 years back in Varthur village, near Rajabavi.

The villagers also worship Lord Shaneshwara so the idol has sentimental value.

The statue is not made of black stone, which is typically used to make idols. So it is clear that the idol has never been worshipped.
