There were reports that the Swimming Federation of India had increased the number after the IOA directed it to do so to ensure the country fields the largest contingent but SFI Secretary Virendra Nanavati said that it was done to give exposure to younger swimmers.

“We have increased the number of swimmers from 26 to 40 on September 15. It was the decision of the selection committee,” he said. “Since India is hosting the Commonwealth Games we thought the youngsters can be given international exposure. So the selection committee increased the number. Now our swimming squad has 53 members, including the officials and support staff,” he added.
