Briefing reporters here, Kumar said: “Just like the Vidhana Soudha and other places, we must allow people to also know the history of the Sappers, which is more or less an integral part of the City’s history.”

He also said that during the interactions with the veterans and on roll Sappers, issues like asymmetric warfare, innovation of training techniques, modernisation and problems of ex-servicemen assumed prime importance.

Definition of war has changed over time and in today’s day and age, asymmetric warfare, where the enemy is not fighting you eye to eye, is the most common type of challenge the army encounters, especially in the Kashmir Valley and the North Eastern region, he said.

Further, he said that technology has also changed the the two most critical things in warfare: movement of troop and ability to strike and kill. With advancements in technology almost every minute, modernisation assumes importance, he added.

For instance, the General said: “Our ability to counter improvised explosive devices (IEDs) including radio controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIEDs) is commendable,” adding that this is a bigger challenge than de-mining operations.

The Sappers also had a Ceremonial Parade at the Govindaswamy Drill Square at their premises earlier in the day.
