'Konkani will be powerful community in next 20 years'


Speaking after laying the foundation stone for Smt T Vimala and T V Raman Pai Hostel Block at World Konkani Centre in Shakthinagar here on Sunday, he stressed the need to preserve Konkani identity.

Stating that “no Konkani child should be deprived of education because of means,” Pai said that Konkani community needs to achieve the topmost position in education and economic status along with the preservation of the culture and language. He also called upon those who are well settled in life to help the poor and needy in the community and to help produce next generation leaders. “The networking sites such as Facebook helps community people to stay in touch wherever they are,” he said.
The 7,650 square feet hostel book in which 36 people can be accommodated is expected to complete by November 2011, said Hostel Block Construction committee President Pradeep Pai.

On the occasion, nine engineering students were given scholarship (Rs 30,000 every year) while Vimala V Pai felicitated eight students for taking Konkani in 6th standard. They were also given books worth Rs 3,800, Rs 1,000 in cash and a school bag.
Meanwhile, Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation Chairman P Dayananda Pai released a booklet on Ravindra Kelekar, the only Konkani man to receive Jnanpeeth award. The Kendra plans to purchase 1,000 sets (of 32 books by Ravindra Kelekar) and to distribute them to all libraries. As many as five sets were symbolically distributed on Sunday.

Dayanand Pai also released the second edition of ‘Tata Tingan,’ a book on Konkani lullabies compiled by Santhosh Kumar Gulvadi.

In his welcome address, Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation President Basti Vamana Shenoy said that the Foundation is focused on the education of the community people along with preserving the Konani culture, tradition and the language. Foundation Secretary Venkatesh N Baliga proposed a vote of thanks.

Foundation Scholarship Fund President Ramadas Kamath and Entrepreneur Raghunatha Shet among others were present.

Foundation at 10.10.10.10.10!

The foundation stone for the Smt T Vimala and T V Raman Pai hostel block was laid by the couple’s son T V Mohandas Pai at 10.10 am on October 10, 2010 (10.10.10.10.10).

Quite interestingly, he plans to inaugurate the hostel block on November 11, 2011, at 11.11 am (11.11.11.11.11).
