A day before voting for Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, security forces today detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device outside historic Jamia Masjid in downtown city.
"A powerful IED, planted by militants, was detected near the main gate of Jamia Masjid in interior Srinagar," CRPF spokesman Prabakar Tripathy said.
The bomb disposal squad, which was immediately summoned, defused the IED, kept in a gas cylinder, averting a possible tragedy.
The spokesman said militants plan to set off an explosion on the eve of polling was foiled with timely detection of the IED by alert CRPF personnel.
