Demand to accord Rajghat status to place where Ambedkar died

Last Updated 27 October 2010, 11:15 IST

"If Gandhi is the Father of the Nation, then Dr Ambedkar is the Father of the Constitution of India," Ambedkar Parinirwan Bhoomi Samman Karyakram Samiti President Indresh Gajbhiye told reporters here.

The Samiti President said the 'Bhoomi' (land) was just opposite the Vidhan Sabha in New Delhi and added that the demand to enhance its status is being made for the last seven years.

Gajbhiye said if the demand was not met, Dalits would boycott Rajghat and 'Samadhis' of those belonging to the Nehru-Gandhi families. He said that there were four places--Mhow, Nagpur, Mumbai and Delhi related to Dr Ambedkar out of which the first three have been given proper status but the fourth has been neglected by the Central government.

Dr Ambedkar died at his residence in Delhi on 6 December 1956.
