Kurnadu Gram Panchayat all set to be an example

The bio waste processing unit at Mudipu is set up on a 20 cent land at a cost about Rs 2.5 lakh out of which Rs 2 lakh was granted by the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and 50,000 was mobilised by the Panchayat itself. The unit that was inaugurated on Gandhi Jayanthi will work on full throttle from November 1, the Kannada Rajyotsava day, collecting waste from shops and households from Kayargoli to Ira Cross in a push cart.

Addressing the media at a press meet Dakshina Kannada  Zilla Panchayat Member from Kurnadu A C Bhandary informed that waste will be collected from 250 shops and households in the Panchayat and the garbage will be segragated  and sprayed with OS1 solution to get healthy compost as the end product.“Being the first village in the state to have such a project we have the responsibility of making this initiative a success and becoming models for other Gram Panchayats,” he opined and added that all the 5 villages under Kurnadu ward  are the recipients of Nirmal Gram Puraskar.

ZP Assistant Secretary Chandrashekar Masaguppi informed that on an average 800 gms of waste will be collected from one individual. The OS1 Solution is made up of 5 types of bacteria, which make the compost odour free. It takes 45 days for the waste to turn into compost. He said that 200 kg manure will be produced with every ton of waste collected.
The non biodegradable waste will be recycled and plastic will be used for the construction of roads, he informed.
