<p>Bannikod, 35, was the son of former MLA Basappa Bannikod. His last rites were conducted in Hirekerur. He is survived by wife and two kids.<br /><br />Bannikod along with a few farmers staged a protest in front of Upper Tunga Project chief engineer’s office on October 16 demanding immediate release of compensation to land losers in Hirekerur taluk. <br /><br />He attempted suicide by self-immolation. His attempt was thwarted and he was taken to a hospital in Shimoga. From there he was shifted to Bangalore, where he died.<br /></p>
