The 23-year-old Bennett, who impressed during a pacy first spell when he hurried India’s top-order on a benign strip, injured his groin on day one and will return to New Zealand for further tests and rehabilitation.

Franklin, who began his career as a left-arm swing bowler and has graduated into a batting all-rounder, played the last of his 26 Tests against India at the Basin Reserve in Wellington in April 2009.

Franklin’s inclusion also has to do with doubts about whether Jesse Ryder can bowl in the second Test against India beginning in Hyderabad on Friday. Ryder stretched his calf during his century in the first Test, and while he fielded during India’s second innings, he didn’t bowl a single over.

“It's an unfortunate injury for Hamish, which will see him miss the remainder of the Test series against India,” said New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch, who is also a selector.

“However, it does create another opportunity for James Franklin to come back into the Blackcaps squad.”

Franklin is expected to arrive in Hyderabad on Wednesday, giving him two days to recover from jet lag and put his hand up for selection for the match due to start on Friday.
